Where is Vieques?

Vieques is six miles east of mainland Puerto Rico,  35 miles west of St. Thomas, USVI and 45 miles north of St. Croix, USVI. Vieques is rustic yet chic and the term "Island Time" is way of life. Vieques has more than 20 beaches some in which the sand is so pristine it feels like walking on marshmallows.  The food is amazing whether you are buying Tacos from Lizzie's Lunch Box or dining in a more luxurious setting like El Quenepo or Carambola.  Vieques is home to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. At night, microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates make the water glow bright blue. The effect is explained by science, but it feels more like magic.  On a clear night tour guides give an amazing stargazing tour pointing out all of the visible constellations.  Episode two of Will Smith's National Geographic show "Welcome to Earth" features a segment on Mosquito Bay.

Getting to Vieques is easy, and Americans don’t need a passport.

We recommend flying. The ferry gives priority to residents who travel for medical appointments, school, prescriptions or supplies and there are times that visitors have to wait for the next boat which are few and far between. This is important, lost vacation time. Although it is only $2 vs. high flight prices, the convenience and time is sometimes worth the extra money.

If you decide to take the ferry you will need to check www.puertoricoferry.com for the schedule. Tickets can be purchased online but only a few days before the date of travel.

The ferry port is in Ceiba which is approx. an hour publico (public taxi) ride from the airport (depending on traffic) and will cost $110.

Publicos are right outside of baggage claim and are facilitated by PR Tourism so their prices are regulated and you will know your charge before getting in the van. They normally can seat 10-12 people. They do accept tips.

There are three options to fly-SJU, IslaGrande, and Ceiba airports

  • The most convenient yet most expensive is, of course, flying out of SJU with Cape Air or a charter flight.
  • A charter flight with Air Margarita is the fastest way to get from SJU to VQS. Depending upon the number of people in your group it also might be cheaper than Cape Air. Call Carmen 787-550-4294
  • Isla Grande airport is a 15 min publico ride away and the airline is Vieques Air Link. AeroTaxi does charter flights from Isla Grande.
  • Ceiba airport is an hour publico ride away and Vieques Air Link has flights to Vieques from this airport as well.

Important to note that the small airlines that fly to Vieques charge a fee ($1 per pound) for luggage over 35 pounds. Swimsuits and flipflops are all you need! Actually a light sweater comes in handy sometimes
